I developed a deep love for Petrified Wood on our travels through the Southwestern United States.
Petrified wood is technically a fossil, formed when the tree is buried by sediment and flooded with silica-rich groundwater. Impurities such as iron, manganese, copper and lithium present in the wood during the fossilizing process, lead to the brilliant and varied color of these unusual gemstones.
