An Introduction to Hematite

Hematite is an iron oxide mineral with a dark grey color and a bright metallic shine. The name Hematite comes from the greek word for “blood,” because of its red hue.

Since we know that iron creates the red color of blood, you might wonder why Hematite is actually a dark silvery grey color. To clear up the confusion, you’ll need to know the difference between the apparent color and streak color of gems. Apparent color is what the gemstone looks like in its natural form. Streak color, also called “powder color,” refers to the color of a mineral in powdered form. And while a Hematite stone is apparently silvery grey, in its powder form, Hematite actually looks red. Taking this a step further, many red gems actually get their color from Hematite, including Fire Quartz (hematoid quartz).

As a classic grounding and protecting gemstone, Hematite is often used for building confidence, releasing negative energy, and connecting to reality.

Hematite naturally has a slight magnetic quality, and this is often enhanced through the man-made process of heating finely powdered iron oxide while applying a strong magnetic field, so that the molecular poles line up to form a permanent magnet. The resulting material is then shaped and polished into Magnetic Hematite.
