An Introduction to Garnet

Garnet is often associated with cherry red to deep merlot tones, but it also occurs in several other colors. In fact, Garnet actually refers to a group of very similar minerals including Almandine, Andradite, Carbuncle, Grossular, Hessonite, Pyrope, Rhodolite, Spessartine, Topazolite and Uvarovite. Colors range from yellow to orange to red to brown and even green.

Garnet has been used by the Egyptian and other civilizations for jewelry and for spiritual practices for 1000s of years. Its name comes from the 14th century Middle English word “gernet,” which means “dark red.” Even farther back the term comes from Latin granatum, meaning “seed,” bringing to mind the gemstone's resemblance to dark red pomegranate seeds.
